The mobile app utilizes your phone's camera and GPS functionalities to create detailed 'voucher records' including photos of the specimen, location coordinates, date, time, and even sound recordings for identifying frogs and toads. Its extensive database allows easy searchability of both common and scientific names of global herpetofauna species. Additionally, the latest version permits users to attach multiple photos and sound files to each record.

An advantage of the HerpMapper app is its ability to function without wireless or cellular service by using your device's native GPS connectivity, making it ideal for recording observations in remote areas. Data collected can be later synchronized with the HerpMapper database when back in range. By creating a free account on the HerpMapper website, users can manage their records, create life lists, and contribute to scientific research and herpetofauna conservation.

Record visibility is managed in two tiers: users and HerpMapper Partners have full access to all data in your records, while other platform users and the public can only view basic information without exact locality details. Photos attached to records are sanitised of location metadata for public viewing on the HerpMapper website, offering a glimpse into herpetological discoveries worldwide.
